Colfax County District Court Overview
New Mexico District Courts are the state's general-jurisdiction trial courts. Colfax County is in the Eighth Judicial District, which also serves Taos and Union counties. District Court handles felony criminal cases, civil matters, domestic relations, juvenile jurisdiction, mental health matters, estate matters that exceed Probate Court's informal authority, and appeals from lower courts when the rules allow. Colfax County District Court Location
The Colfax District Court shares the 1413 S. Second Street judicial building with the Raton Magistrate Court. That address is separate from the historic county courthouse and from the County Clerk's current office at 333 Savage Ave. Use the New Mexico Courts contact page for current court operations, but the county jury-duty page is useful for jury-service routing and phone confirmation.

Colfax District Court Jurisdiction
District Court hears tort, contract, real-property-rights, estate, domestic relations, mental health, administrative and lower-court appeals, miscellaneous civil jurisdiction, misdemeanors in some contexts, exclusive criminal appeals, and juvenile jurisdiction. Felony criminal prosecutions are District Court matters once filed, bound over, or indicted. Divorce, custody, parentage, child support, kinship, guardianship, and other domestic-relations cases are also District Court records.
Estate jurisdiction is split. The Colfax County Probate Court handles informal probate and uncontested estates, but contested estate cases move to District Court. That means a person searching estate records may need both probate-record channels and District Court case lookup when a dispute exists. District Court vs Lower Courts
Colfax County court records are easiest to find when the court level is known. District Court is the general-jurisdiction trial court. Magistrate Court handles many misdemeanor, DWI/DUI, traffic, landlord-tenant, contract, tort, real-property-rights, and felony preliminary matters. Municipal Court handles petty misdemeanors, DWI/DUI, traffic violations, and city ordinance violations for Raton or Springer.

Colfax Case Flow
Criminal case flow often begins with arrest, booking, first appearance, and charging. Felonies may appear first in Magistrate Court for preliminary proceedings, then proceed in District Court if bound over, indicted, or filed there. Misdemeanor, DWI, and traffic cases may remain in Magistrate or Municipal Court depending on the charging agency and jurisdiction. Civil case flow starts with filing, service, answer or response, motion practice, hearing or trial, judgment, and possible appeal.

For Colfax County District Court case metadata, use Case Lookup with District Court and location 809 - Raton where appropriate. Case Lookup supports party name, driver's license, date of birth, case-number filters, court type, court location, case category, date type, date range, and result-limit fields. It does not provide documents. It also limits personal identifying information, juvenile criminal case display, and Family Violence Protection Act order-of-protection display.
For documents, use the court clerk counter, the New Mexico Courts IPRA request form, or re:SearchNM if the user's profile gives document access. re:SearchNM is a registered-user system for Odyssey case information and documents by user profile. Secured Odyssey Public Access also requires login and is not the general no-registration public tool.
Colfax District Court Dockets
The Eighth Judicial District posts a Colfax County District Court docket page for Raton. Public docket snippets observed in the research showed hearing time, case number, case caption, and hearing type. Example District Court case-number patterns use D-809, with category codes such as CR or CV, year, and sequence. Dockets are useful for hearing dates, but they are not the full case file and do not provide documents in the inspected output.
Use the official docket page when appearance timing matters, then confirm with the court if a hearing may have changed. New Mexico Courts pages can also carry closure notices, and rural travel from outside Raton makes same-day confirmation practical.
Colfax Treatment and DWI Programs
The Eighth Judicial District Treatment Courts page names the Raton Adult Drug Court as the directly relevant Colfax County treatment court program. The official page describes treatment courts as drug and alcohol treatment strategies administered and supervised by the Eighth Judicial District Court in partnership with criminal justice, mental health, drug, and alcohol treatment professionals. The research did not locate official length, eligibility, judge, graduation rate, or participant count for the Raton program.
Colfax County's DWI/UAD Prevention Program is not a court docket, but it sits in the local DWI and traffic case ecosystem. The county page says the program aims to decrease DWI incidents and crashes and reduce underage drinking through prevention, screening and tracking, treatment, offender compliance, coordination, evaluation, and planning.
Federal Court Is Separate
Colfax County is also within the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico, but federal cases are not Colfax County District Court records. Federal criminal prosecutions, federal-question civil cases, diversity civil cases, immigration habeas matters, prisoner civil rights, and other federal matters use federal court systems. State felony cases in Colfax County stay in New Mexico District Court unless a separate federal prosecution, removal, or appeal route exists.

Bankruptcy Court Records
Bankruptcy is also separate from Colfax County District Court. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Mexico handles bankruptcy cases statewide. Its case information page says PACER allows users with an internet connection and PACER account to view or print case documents online, with a fee charged for each page viewed. These are federal bankruptcy records, not state District Court files.
